Workshop: Photography Using Flash
with Diogo Oliveira
THE USE OF FLASH IN WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY REQUIRES TECHNICAL MASTERY, RESPECT FOR THE SUBJECT AND A KEEPSAKE FOR LIGHT. THIS ADVANCED WORKSHOP IS DESIGNED TO EXPLORE THE FULL CREATIVE AND SCIENTIFIC POTENTIAL OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT IN THE FIELD.
This in-person workshop, led by Diogo Oliveira, biologist and wildlife photographer, is aimed at experienced photographers who want to learn more about using flash in natural environments. Advanced technical concepts will be covered, such as synchronization of multiple flashes, light modification, management of the balance between natural and artificial light, and control of reflections and shadows, always with an ethical and sensitive approach to animal welfare.
During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to carry out practical sessions at dusk and during the night, in carefully prepared scenarios that favor the creative use of light. Special attention will be given to the photography of nocturnal species, such as amphibians, reptiles, insects or bats, and strategies for working with discretion and precision will be discussed.
This workshop is recommended for those who want to expand their technical horizons, create impactful images with their own identity and explore new possibilities in nature photography. A demanding but deeply enriching experience.

Example
In this wildlife photography workshop using flash, we will explore advanced artificial lighting techniques applied to field photography, capturing impactful images of animals in their natural environment, with absolute respect for ethics and wildlife welfare. Combining technical knowledge and practical sessions, this training offers an intense and in-depth experience for those who want to master the use of flash in challenging conditions.
Throughout the workshop, we will cover essential topics such as controlling artificial light in natural environments, using diffusers, reflectors and multiple flashes, synchronizing with ambient light and best practices to avoid disturbing wildlife. A significant part of the time will be dedicated to field practice, at twilight or nighttime, ideal for exploring the behavior of species with discreet or nocturnal habits.
This workshop is designed for photographers with previous experience who are looking to expand their technical and creative skills, through a demanding but highly rewarding approach.
Workshop Modules
Learn on the field
In this advanced level workshop, learning takes place side by side with the trainer, in the target species' own habitat, at challenging times such as twilight or night. In the field, participants practice assembling lighting systems, testing lighting schemes, adjusting settings in real time, and tackling unpredictable conditions – all with expert guidance. This practical experience allows you to develop refined technical mastery and an ethical sensitivity essential to using flash responsibly and effectively in nature photography. Here, theory comes to life and each session is an opportunity to grow as a photographer and naturalist.
