BETWEEN UNSTABLE TIDES AND WIND-SHAPED DUNES, THE MINDELO COAST REVEALS A DISCREET LIFE THAT ENDURES WHERE FEW NOTICE. ON THE BORDER BETWEEN LAND AND OCEAN, EACH GRAIN OF SAND HIDES FOOD, DANGER, AND HOPE. IT IS IN THIS EXPOSED AND CONSTANTLY CHANGING SCENARIO THAT THE KENTISH PLOVER FINDS SPACE TO SURVIVE, CREATE, AND FACE ONE OF THE MOST DEMANDING ENVIRONMENTS ON THE PORTUGUESE COAST.
Sand Tides – On the Coast is a documentary focused on the coastal region of Mindelo, closely following the annual cycle of the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), a wading bird that depends directly on these beaches for nesting and feeding. Throughout the film, we observe its stealthy behavior, the constant search for small invertebrates among the grains of sand, and the camouflage strategies it uses to protect nests almost invisible to the human eye.
The narrative spans the seasons, contrasting the violence of winter storms—which reshape the beach and test the physical limits of these birds—with the increasing human pressure during the summer, when the plover's living space is reduced by the presence of bathers, pedestrian traffic, and recreational activities. At the same time, the documentary portrays the natural dynamics of the coastal ecosystem, including other organisms that share this fragile habitat, reinforcing the idea that the beach is much more than just a leisure space.
With an observational and sensitive approach, Sand Tides – On the Coast seeks to give visibility to a species little known to the general public, highlighting the importance of conserving coastal areas and the coexistence between human activity and wildlife. It is an intimate portrait of resilience, adaptation, and silence, on a coastline where each tide rewrites the history of the life that persists there.
