BIODIVERSITY WORKSHOPS
Biodiversity workshops are perfect for helping children and young people understand the importance of biodiversity and nature conservation.
The activities in the workshops are playful and aim to show the importance of fauna, emphasizing its protection and conservation. We seek to relate the planet's economy to the needs of its populations and their dependence on biological resources.
The disappearance of species impoverishes ecosystems, making them less productive and ultimately affecting the quality of human life. The loss of biodiversity leads to losses in air, water, and soil quality, potentially resulting in crop failures, water unfit for consumption, or air with high concentrations of toxins.
Context
We aim to highlight the importance of conservation in urban environments, recognizing that biodiversity plays an irreplaceable role in ensuring the quality of human life in cities. The activities to be developed seek to create knowledge about which structures are most suitable for bird reproduction, for shelters for various mammal species, and also the construction of feeders and waterers that will bring the species closer to young scientists. The program consists of:
-
Theoretical introduction (in a location with projection capabilities)
-
Practical exercise (some activities require that everything be carried out outdoors)
-
Execution of the outdoor practice (followed by the initial part in the classroom)
OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOPS
The main objectives of the biodiversity workshops are to provide participants with the necessary tools to identify some of Portugal's native species, understand the threats they face, and learn how they can help them. This involves creating a connection with the fauna they can observe in their daily lives and dispelling some of the myths surrounding them.
-
Increase knowledge about our species
-
Provide tools for their conservation
-
Increase conservation in urban areas
Additional Information
Our cities are becoming increasingly green; year after year, more green spaces and naturalized areas are emerging, even if artificially, attracting diverse species. This workshop aims to highlight the importance of conservation in urban environments, recognizing that biodiversity plays an irreplaceable role in ensuring the quality of human life in cities. We will explain the importance of creating suitable structures for bird reproduction, the best shelters for various mammal species, the importance of insect hotels, and even the construction of feeders and waterers that will bring species closer to young scientists. In the practical part, students/participants will build a bird feeder using recycled materials, in this case, a Tetra Pak carton.
Required Materials:
The contracting entity must provide the following equipment:
-
Personal accident insurance for each participant
-
Room + Computer + Projector
