This scientific expedition combined photography and biology in one of the planet’s most unique ecosystems, where lemurs, chameleons, and endemic frogs emerge through mist and dense foliage. Through the lens, I documented both scientific work and extraordinary species, contributing to the conservation and understanding of Madagascar’s remarkable wildlife.

Their flight is facilitated by their advanced sonar system, echolocation, which gave rise to the sonars used in boats. This ability to perceive the world around them using sound allows them to avoid obstacles and also detect insects in flight.

This was my first photographic project. It started with an idea that I began to implement, where I had to improve some composition techniques and light control, and where I had to acquire some extra equipment to achieve the best results. In the end, I ended up building several wooden structures that I carry into the field to photograph the animals in a safer environment.

Over the past few years, I have developed and delivered several talks on wildlife photography, covering topics ranging from field techniques to the role of imagery in biodiversity conservation. These sessions, previously presented at schools, universities, science centres, and festivals, remain available for new events — and can be adapted to suit the context of each audience.
Among the previously developed topics are: “Photography with a Hidrohide”, “Stories Behind the Images”, and “Photography Using Wildlife Hides”. However, it is also possible to create new, customised talks tailored to the audience's interests, incorporating updated content, recent experiences, and new field images.

About Diogo Oliveira
My name is Diogo Oliveira, I am a Wildlife Photographer and Biologist in Portugal. Graduated in Biology from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia and Master in Conservation Biology from the University of Évora. I spend a large part of my time photographing the most fantastic animals. I have visited many countries and collaborated with large companies, brands, NGOs, and tourism agencies. I enjoy playing tennis, building Lego, watching movies and series, and I'm a big Star Wars fan.
