Under the ground...

It is one of the groups of mammals that most fascinates me. They have the ability to fly like birds, however, they are mammals like us humans. Its flight is facilitated by its advanced sonar system, echolocation. Which gave rise to the sonars used on boats. This ability of theirs to see the world around them using sounds, allows them to dodge obstacles but also detect insects in flight.
·
When I was a teenager I had the opportunity to enter several caves through Ciência Viva no Verão. I loved that world, being underground, seeing the structures that form and above all getting out of there all dirty! It was a unique opportunity, I could be at ease, and explore worlds that few people have the opportunity to explore. When I was studying, the opportunity arose to accompany a team of scientists (friends) to bat monitoring and ringing sessions, I could help them and above all photograph the bats.
·
Later I started to accompany other teams and to have the opportunity to explore new worlds, new caves, and new colonies. But what triggers my interest the most is the scientific part, because bats are one of the most important groups for ecosystems, but they are also one of the most sensitive. The idea of this project is to show a little of their life, and the work carried out by several Portuguese scientists in the search for new answers about bats in Portugal.
Highlights of this project include:
-
Photograph the different species of bats that exist in Portugal
-
Create promotional articles to help promote bat conservation in Portugal
-
Filming bats for national dissemination
-
Create a wildlife documentary about bats in Portugal

Highlights of this project include:
-
More than 40 bats were captured to collect samples from 4 different caves
-
The photographs were used to illustrate several scientific articles
-
Some photographs were used in the Atlas dos Bats de Portugal Continental and in the Illustrated Guide to Mediterranean Temporary Ponds on the Southwest Coast
-
The photographs were used in different reports on the status of bats in Portugal and in presentations on bats in Portugal
-
This project was presented at the Birdwatching Festival in Sagres
-
Part of the project was presented at Universidade Lusófona to Conservation Medicine students
